Vocational Training Centre Bad Wildbad: Digitalisation improves the health protection of our staff

At the Vocational Training Centre Bad Wildbad, together with the Heinrich-Sommer Clinic, people who need to reorient their lives due to illness or accident prepare for their professional and private future. In the midst of everyday operations, the cleaning robot Robomatic Marvin takes care of floor cleaning in the entrance area. Ms. Ingrid Kollmer, Head of Housekeeping, and her team would not want to be without Marvin anymore.

Ms. Kollmer, why is thorough cleaning so important in your facility?

In a medical institution, it is vital to prevent the spread of bacteria and to ensure the safety of patients.

You have modernised your floor cleaning. What led to this step – and why now?

We are planning a new clinic building, and digitalisation is a central theme in this process. Three aspects were decisive:

  1. Our cleaning standard must remain high. Today, technology enables a level of cleanliness that we can no longer achieve manually.

  2. Our long-standing staff are getting older, and the physical strain of cleaning is increasing. Digitalisation relieves them.

  3. We want to take away employees’ fear of modernisation and demonstrate the benefits. We are also considering the use of new technologies in other areas, not only in cleaning.

So as part of digitalisation you chose the Wetrok cleaning robot. How much time does it save you?

Across the entire facility, we save up to four hours per day.

And where exactly is Marvin used?

He cleans all floors in the entire building – except carpets. That’s around 5,400 m² of floor space: tiles, PVC, linoleum, safety tiles in the swimming pool area, and parquet in the sports hall.

How did you clean the floors before?

Until September 2023, the entire team cleaned all floors manually with mops.

What tasks can you now focus on more?

Today, we have more time for other duties, such as preparing patient rooms during changeovers.

You also use Wetrok’s Masslinn dust-binding cloths. Why?

Because Marvin doesn’t reach into corners, we use Masslinn cloths for dust-binding cleaning. The rule is: one cloth per room – this prevents germ transfer. We use various Wetrok products and are very satisfied. But Marvin excites us the most.

What excites you most about Marvin?

How much the robot supports us: we gain time for other tasks. Thanks to the integrated dosing system, we use cleaning agents and water sparingly and efficiently – conserving resources and reducing costs.

How long did you test Marvin?

We integrated him directly into daily clinic operations to get a realistic picture. A short test of three to four days would not have been meaningful. Around 70 paraplegic wheelchair users live in our clinic. For us it was crucial to see whether Marvin was perceived as support or disturbance. We are pleased that he met expectations.

What are the biggest cleaning challenges?

In winter, the entrance area: moisture and road salt from outside put a heavy strain on the floors. Rubber abrasion from wheelchairs is also stubborn. In addition, the corridors are busy with patients, staff, and visitors. Marvin navigates reliably around them – stopping or swerving depending on the situation.

How do patients react to Marvin?

Many enjoy him; some even see him almost as a toy. Some greet him with “Good morning.” Marvin lightens the atmosphere – almost like a pet.

And how did your team react?

Extremely positively! The staff were courageous in integrating this innovation into their daily work. Ms. Galinec, now our “Marvin specialist,” had no prior robotics experience. Through the robot, she gained self-confidence and discovered new interests. In this case, digitalisation has even promoted staff development. The internal perception of the housekeeping department has also benefited.

Which other Wetrok devices do you use?

We also work with a scrubber-dryer, an orbital machine, an extraction machine, a single-disc machine, a wet vacuum, and a cleaning trolley.

Why do you still need the walk-behind scrubber-dryer Mambo if you have Marvin?

The Mambo is intended for our large classrooms. At the moment, we use it in parallel with Marvin – this is more efficient. Both machines complement each other well: the Mambo is more manoeuvrable and reaches corners more easily.

From what floor area is a robot worthwhile?

Floor size is a factor, but cleaning frequency is just as important. With us, cleaning is very frequent, plus there are deep cleans during the summer holidays. Here Marvin is a great relief. It’s not just about cleanliness, but also about ergonomics. Working with a mop puts a heavy strain on the back and the whole body.

Does that mean ergonomics and health protection played a major role in your decision?

Definitely. Especially in the entrance area, the work was very strenuous. Constantly opening the sliding door exposed staff to cold drafts, and they often caught colds while sweating. Today Marvin protects us in this respect as well.

«I recommend Marvin to anyone who needs to clean large areas – from industrial companies to shopping centres, hospitals, and care facilities. He ensures thorough cleaning and is a worthwhile investment, especially in the care sector.»

Do you plan to purchase more robots?

With the upcoming doubling of our floor area due to the new clinic building, we are considering another robot. Our current experience will help with this decision.

Do you have any improvement suggestions for Marvin?

A friendly face in the form of stickers would be nice. That would particularly delight children and elderly people.
